Nursing care and treatment of cerebral vasospasm following Essay
Nursing care and treatment of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid haemorrhage - Essay Example Cerebral vasospasm is one of the devastating complications following subarachnoid hemorrhage and is associated with high mortality.Despite extensive study and research, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of this complication remains poorly understood Despite extensive study and research, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of this complication remains poorly understood. Because of this, medical treatment of this condition is largely limited to calcium channel blockers, triple-H therapy and the most recent papaverine infusion and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. More often than not, clinical signs and symptoms of cerebral vasospasm are first recognised by a nurse, who then alerts the physician. Thus, nurses caring for patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage must be aware of cerebral vasospasm and the necessary steps that must be taken after detecting the condition (Kosty, 2005). Also, treatments for vasospasm are at risk of several complications which must be monitored by the ca re taking nurse closely. Thus, nurses play a very important role in the recognition and management of cerebral vasospasm following subarachnoid hemorrhage (Campbell, 1997). In this review, critical analysis of nursing management of cerebral vasospasm will be done. Aims The aims of the review are to critically analyse and evaluate treatment of cerebral vasospasm secondary to subarachnoid hemorrhage through a nursing perspective. Objectives ... There are several causes for subarachnoid hemorrhage, the most common cause being pre-existing aneurysm. Subarachnoid hemorrhage due to aneurysm is not preventable because; it is very difficult to detect aneurysms that are unruptured (Kosty, 2005). Aneurysms are lesions that are acquired on the arterial walls because of hemodynamic stress. They usually occur over bends and points of bifurcation. There are several types of aneurysms, those which occur in intracranial arteries are saccular and berry aneurysms (Kosty, 2005). This is because; intracranial arteries do not have external elastic lamina and have adventia that is very thin. Both these predispose to aneurysms. Another factor that makes intracranial arteries vulnerable to aneurysms is the fact that they lie in the subarachnoid space without any support. Aneurysms mainly occur in the internal carotid artery's terminal portion and also from the branches arises from the anterior aspect of the circle of Willis (Becske, and Jallo, 2 010). The estimated prevalence of subarachnoid hemorrhage in populations all over the world is 0.3- 5 percent (Becske, and Jallo, 2010). The incidence is slightly more in women than in men. The mean age of this emergency is around 50 years (Becske, and Jallo, 2010). The mortality associated with this condition is very high. 60 percent of the patients die within 30 days following the hemorrhage (Becske, and Jallo, 2010). Of these, 10 percent die without any warning (Becske, and Jallo, 2010). 30 percent of patients die within the first 2 weeks (Kosty, 2005) and 15 percent of the patients develop severe disability (Kosty, 2005). Only less than 30 percent patients have moderate or good recovery (Kosty, 2005). Other than mortality, sub-arachnoid hemorrhage also leads to

Happy Ending by Margaret Atwood Essay Example for Free
Happy Ending by Margaret Atwood Essay In this essay, I examine the short story, ââ¬Å"Happy Endings,â⬠by Margaret Atwood and how the Canadian author tackled the topic of love and the different ways it is portrayed in relationships and marriage, as well as examined writing styles as used in the story. For my conclusion, I will elaborate on the importance of love and romance in making marriages last as well as emphasize on the cruciality of coming up with an original and authentic literary work. In this story, Atwood focused on both the mechanics of writing and the effects of gender stereotyping, as well as challenged writers who rely on the stereotypical characterization of men and women and to the reader who accepts such gender typing. At the same time, she challenged other writers to more closely examine typical literary convention. Happy Endings has six story versions that present a different scenario of what Through analysis of ââ¬Å"Happy Endingsâ⬠by Margaret Atwood happens to the main characters, John, Mary, Madge and Fred. Three main themes surface from this story. These themes are that the story depicts middle-class values; portrays marriage and romance; and illustrates writing conventions. Touching on middle-class values, Atwood represents these values in her story as an element of the society. In doing so, the characters in the story manifest them even in the more troublesome aspects of the stories. In tackling marriage and romance, the story revolves around the fulfillment that marriage brings. Using material success and ease of life as the criteria to define a successful marriage, John and Mary certainly have built one. Romance, on the other hand, also emerges as an important theme. The various versions of the story mimic the trajectory of cliched romance novels, which end with the hero and the heroine living happily ever after. Atwood also parodies some typical plots of romantic novels, which include murder, suicide, infidelity, and disease. Lastly, Atwood also dealt with writing conventions in the story by way of experimentation. Atwoodââ¬â¢s text in the story is self-referential as she explicitly refers to events that have happened earlier on, as well as the mechanics and elements of writing. Both directly and indirectly, Atwood addresses the whole notion of how an author develops a story. In addition, Atwoodââ¬â¢s work also challenges writers to compose authentic works. From the above information and opinions, I conclude that for a more different and effective way of writing, authenticity is important for writers to value. I also conclude that love in marriage or any kind of relationship needs romance to be its companion in order for these relationships to last as romance is the oil that keeps friction from wearing out the relationship. Are Looks Worth It? Essay -- Eating Disorders Anorexia Health Essays
Are Looks Worth It? I was recently coming back from Parris Island, SC on a Greyhound bus when I noticed a young girl around my age sitting next to the window across the isle; she looked a lot like me, tall and slim. I did not think anything of it because I have a very fast metabolism and I eat all the time but can not gain weight. Well we stopped to get food and I noticed that she got stuff from McDonalds and was quietly eating her food. About ten minutes after she got done she ran to the back of the bus and into the bathroom. As she was running back there I heard people shouting gwow she just had to smell the food to pukeh, or gthere are way too many anorexic girls now in the world.h As I was hearing those comments I really wanted to stand up for her, but then I just sat there and thought, what do people think of me when I am eating? I have been pegged as an anorexic person my whole life. After awhile it actually starts to sound like a cover up when I tell people, no, I am not anorexic I just have a fast metabolism. A metabolism is all the chemical reactions in the body. When you have a fast metabolism, it is like your body is doing a bunch of exercises with out even moving, so your body burns all the fat; the fat which makes you over weight. People who are overweight and resort to an eating disorder have a hard time loving the person that they really are. There are more people in that Meredith2 situation then you actually think. According to Pirtle, a writer from Health magazine, gAccording to conservative estimates, eating disorders affect between 5 million and 10 million young women in the Untied States. How To Talk About Sculpture
Consider if the material is an advancement for that time (I. E. Oil paints) 3. Subject ââ¬â what or who does it represent? 4. Method of sculpting? Additive Roding subtractive Michelangelo found object Decamp 5. Tyler/period? Regional satirical artist's personal style (style of the workshop) 6. Point of view? WHY? (hint: you have to look at 8, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to answer this) Where was it originally? (see #13 and 14) *** 7. Composition ââ¬â organization of forms (form: shape and structure, ad or ad)? While the Sours can be divided equally traits down the center (axial symmetry) the Speedboater CANNOT. Yet, the Sparseness's lines are based on a system of diagonals that help to create contraption tense -vassalage helping to create movement. Now look at the composition of both pieces. The Sours is both balanced and exhibiting axial symmetry, however the Speedboater is also balanced but NOT exhibiting axial symmetry as it is possible for a piece of art work to be balanced but not symmetrical. 9. Color if any?Where was this sculpture originally? What does it do to the museum space that it currently occupies? How do you think it would have affected the space around it in its original position? 14. Intended use? Intention usually affects the space around it and is directly related to the ââ¬Å"three ASâ⬠of shaping art that you will know and love by the end of the master: patronage, philosophy (including religion) and propaganda. Now that you've done all that let's READ the piece: 1 . How do the formal aspects relate to the school/style of the period, person or school? Outside sources? Do they follow suit or do they break free from the constraints and introduce something NEW? What does this mean? Was there some kind of advancement? Was there a new THOUGHT or belief system coming into play? 2. How do the formal aspects affect the feeling of the piece, how does it affect the view and the space around it? . How do the formal aspects reflect its purpose? . How do the formal aspects SHAPE the piece you are looking at? How does the artist CHOOSE to manipulate these formal TECHNIQUES to create meaning? 5. How do the ââ¬Å"three ASâ⬠shape the formal aspects and in turn shape the piece and the artist's methods of making the piece? This is only the beginning of the process. Human resource management Essay
1. How can human resource management contribute to a companyââ¬â¢s success? Human resource can contribute to a companyââ¬â¢s success in that, it helps the organization motivate people ensuring that their goals are met and satisfied, individualââ¬â¢s goals or needs could vary from money, self-realization, learning, developing and more so growing as an individual. 2. Imagine that a small manufacturing company decides to invest in a materials resource planning (MRP) system. This is a computerized information system that improves efficiency by automating such work as planning needs for resources, ordering materials, and scheduling work on the shop floor. The company hopes that with the new MRP system, it can grow by quickly and efficiently processing small orders for a variety of products. Which of the human resource functions are likely to be affected by this change? How can human resource management help the organization carry out this change successfully? The human resource functions likely to be affected by almost all nine functions of Human resources. The design of work would need to be considered in a new light than it was before the change in systems. The human resource management job would change itself as itââ¬â¢d become automated, Recruitment, selection, hiring as well as training would require some modifications. Performance management would need to be reevaluated because of the changes from the new system. Human resource management can help the organization carry out the change successfully by using its knowledge of individualââ¬â¢s behavior as well as performance management tools so as to help the organization to manage the process in a productive manner. 3. What skills are important for success in human resource management? Which of these skills are already strengths of yours? Which would you like to develop? The skills important for Human resource management are as follows: * Organizational * Business Ethics * Communication * Multitasking * Dedication * Decision making skills * Leadership skills * Technical skills All of these skills are strengths of mine; however, I need to improve on my leadership skills as well as my technical skills to keep me updated on new techniques. 3. Traditionally, human resource management practices were developed and administered by the companyââ¬â¢s human resource department. Line managers are now playing a major role in developing and implementing HRM practices. Why do you think non-HR managers are becoming more involved? Line managers are becoming involved in the development and implementations of human resource management practices because the information from line managers is needed to determine policies and practices that would be used to reinforce the day to day needs of the organization 5. If you were to start a business, which aspects of human resource management would you want to entrust to specialists? Why? If I were to start a business, the aspects of human resource management which I would entrust to specialists are Administrative services and transactions, which would take care of hiring employees and answering questions. I chose this aspect because, with the knowledge of my business, the human resource specialist will be in a better position to find the qualified applicants. 6. Why do all managers and supervisors need knowledge and skills related to human resource management? All managers and supervisors need knowledge and skills related to human resource management because; some of their responsibilities are usually closely related with the functions of human resource managers, such as interviewing candidates, providing training, analyzing employees work. Taking a close look at their jobs, managers and supervisors are sometimes the face of the company to their employees. 7. Federal law requires that employers not discriminate on the basis of a personââ¬â¢s race, sex, national origin, or age over 40. Is this also an ethical requirement? A competitive requirement? Explain. In my opinion, it is not an ethical requirement because ethics simply refers to the principles of knowing what is right and what is wrong. Further, organizations have to adhere to laws and regulations which are put in place. It is not a competitive requirement either because; most people would rather work for a company who they can trust. If the company is operating on an unethical manner, its might be detriment to the company and if they operate in an ethical manner, then the company would benefit from that. 8. When a restaurant employee slipped on spilled soup and fell, requiring the evening off to recover, the owner realized that workplace safety was an issue to which she had not devoted much time. A friend warned the owner that if she started creating a lot of safety rules and procedures, she would lose her focus on customers and might jeopardize the future of the restaurant. The safety problem is beginning to feel like an ethical dilemma. Suggest some ways the restaurant owner might address this dilemma. What aspects of human resource management are involved? The restaurant owner may address this dilemma by acquiring some knowledge on the values of safety training as safety is important for workers as well as the customers. If the owner views the safety training as an addition to value to the restaurant, the owner may be able to get over any fears and worries associated with this dilemma. The area of human resource management that could be involved would be the training and development function. 9. Does a career in human resource management, based on this chapterââ¬â¢s description, appeal to you? Why or why not? No, a career in human resource management does not appeal to me, this is because, I have career aspirations which does not fall under any aspects of Human resource management.

Ted Bundy Essays - Ted Bundy, Necrophiles, Serial Killer, Ted
Ted Bundy Essays - Ted Bundy, Necrophiles, Serial Killer, Ted Ted Bundy Ted Bundy's Trail of Terror From the Beginning of Taking Life Until The End of His Serial killers tend to be white heterosexual males in their twenties and thirties. While it is impossible to predict who will become a serial killer there are traits that appear to be similar in all killers. These behaviors include cruelty to animals, bedwetting, lying, drug and alcohol abuse, and a history of violence. According to Robert Ressler et al., serial homicide involves the murder of separate of separate victims with time breaks between victims, as minimal as two days to weeks or months. These time breaks are referred to as a cooling off period. Because homicides involving multiple victims is gradually becoming more commonplace, and to facilitate an understanding of the aforementioned definition, it is helpful to differentiate serial murder from other types of murder, such as mass murder, which involves, four or more victims killed within a short time span, and spree killings, which Ressler et al. defines as a series of sequential homicides connected to one event committed over a time period of hours to days and without a cooling off period. Ted Bundy is one of the worst serial killers in history. His antisocial personality and psychotic character made him feared across the country. After all was said and done Ted left behind a trail of bloody slayings that included the deaths of 36 young women and spanned through four states. The biggest question in many people's mind was how could someone as intelligent, highly accomplished, and praised as Bundy do such a thing? Theodore Robert Bundy was born November 24th, 1946 in Burlinton, Vermont to a 21 year old mother. Ted's mom never told him much about his father except that he was in the armed forces and they had only dated a few times. Ted was left in foster care for two months while his mom and parents decided what to do with him. In 1946 an illegitimate child was extremely looked down upon by society. Once they decided to keep Ted his grandparents told everyone he was their adopted son. Ted knew who his biological mom was, but outsiders were told that she was his sister. Ted adored his grandfather. His grandfather was also particularly fond of Ted. He remembered camping and fishing trips he and his grandfather would go on. Other family members describe his grandfather as an ill-tempered tyrant. He was racist, intolerant, and a perfectionist. He expected everyone to meet his demands. His grandfather was also verbally abusive toward other family members and physically abusive toward his wife. He also physically mistreated animals including the family pet. Ted's grandmother suffered from depression. It got so bad that she was eventually treated with electroshock therapy. She also suffered from agoraphobia and never left the house. When Ted was three years old, his Aunt, age 15, said she awoke to find him slipping butcher knives into the bed beside her under the covers. She told him to leave and took the knives back. She said no one in the family did anything about this. (Time Life) The older Ted got, it became more difficult to hide his family's identity and his secret mother. With this his mother moved to Washington where she met and married John Bundy. At the time Ted was four years old. He was adopted by John and his new parents had four children together. From the beginning Ted did well in school. His teachers complimented him on his good grades. But they also commented on Ted's inability to control his violent temper. Friends recall Ted as one who would usually avoid fights, though when provoked could explode with frightening violence and anger. Ted was active in Boy Scouts and attended church regularly. He also held a part-time job and made excellent grades. Ted just dated once during high school and was described as shy. It was around this time that Ted began sneaking out of the house and peeping into windows. He became a Peeping Tom. He occasionally disabled a woman's car to make her more vulnerable, without actually doing anything to her(Time Life). He found these behaviors sexually arousing and masturbated while doing them.

Definition and Examples of Science Writing
Definition and Examples of Science Writing The term science writing refers toà writing about a scientific subject matter, often in a non-technical manner for an audience of non-scientists (a form of journalism or creative nonfiction). Also called popular science writing.à (Definition No. 1) Science writing may also refer to writing that reports scientific observations and results in a manner governed by specific conventions (a form of technical writing). More commonly known as scientific writing. (Definition No. 2) Examples and Observations Because science writing is intended to be entertainingà enough to capture the continued interestà of potential readers, its style is much less somber than the usual scientific writing [i.e., definition No. 2, above]. The use of slang, puns, and other word plays on the English languageà are accepted and even encouraged. . . .Distinguishing between science writing and scientific writing is reasonable of Science Writing: Stripped for Parts:à Sustaining a dead body until its organs can be harvested is a tricky process requiring the latest in medical technology. But its also a distinct anachronism in an era when medicine is becoming less and less invasive. Fixing blocked coronary arteries, which not long ago required prying a patients chest open with a saw and spreader, can now be accomplished with a tiny stent delivered to the heart on a slender wire threaded up the leg. Exploratory surgery has given way to robot cameras and high-resolution imaging. Already, we are eyeing the tan talizing summit of gene therapy, where diseases are cured even before they do damage. Compared with such microscale cures, transplants- which consist of salvaging entire organs from a heart-beating cadaver and sewing them into a different body- seem crudely mechanical, even medieval. On Explaining Science The question is not should you explain a concept or process, but how can you do so in a way that is clear and so readable that it is simply part of the story? Use explanatory strategies such as ... - People who study what makes an explanation successful have found that while giving examples is helpful, giving nonexamples is even better.Nonexamples are examples of what something is not. Often, that kind of example will help clarify what the thing is. If you were trying to explain groundwater, for instance, you might say that, while the term seems to suggest an actual body of water, such as a lake or an underground river, that would be an inaccurate image. Groundwater is not a body of water in the traditional sense; rather, as Katherine Rowan, communications professor, points out, it is water moving slowly but relentlessly through cracks and crevices in the ground below us...Be acutely aware of your readers beliefs. You might write that chance is the best explanation of a disease cluster; but this could be counterproductive if your readers reject chance as an explanation for anything. If you are aware that readers beliefs may collide with an explanation you give, you may be able to write in a way that doesnt cause these readers to block their minds to the science you explain. The Lighter Side of Science Writing In this paragraph I will state the main claim that the research makes, making appropriate use of scare quotes to ensure that its clear that I have no opinion about this research whatsoever. In this paragraph, I will briefly (because no paragraph should be more than one line) state which existing scientific ideas this new research challenges. If the research is about a potential cure or a solution to a problem, this paragraph will describe how it will raise hopes for a group of sufferers or victims. This paragraph elaborates on the claim, adding weasel-words like the scientists say to shift responsibility for establishing the likely truth or accuracy of the research findings on to absolutely anybody else but me, the journalist. ... Human Resource Management - Essay Example Likewise, I recognized that as increasing numbers of organizations have joined the globalization bandwagon, more theories and practices in HRM need to be reappraised to incorporate global issues such as culture, virtual teams, telecommunications applications, performance appraisals and leadership (DeCenzo & Robbins, 2006). Strategy - Essay Example But the need to look attractive has never decreased. Hence, a good demand exists for the alternatives that are cheaper and equally attractive. The Industry: Jewelry industry is a very developed enterprise in the world. Scores of world famous brands of Gold, Platinum and Diamond are popular in New York and other big cities throughout the USA. The sales have however dropped a great deal in the recent times due to acute rise in the prices (Wallop, 2011). Jewelers have now developed a new breed of artificial jewelry that looks exactly like the original gold but costs way lesser than the original. An alloy with 82% by mass of pure copper, 11.5% zinc, 4.9% tin and small quantities of ammoniac salt and limestone shines exactly like gold with the same color. And once the alloy is obtained in ingots, the process of making jewelry from it is essentially the same as from original gold. Similarly, other alloys such as Mosaic Gold, Nuremberg Gold and French Gold all resemble original gold in appe arance and manufacturability without having traces of pure gold in them. The idea presented to Triangular Solutions is to market artificial jewelry made up of any of these alloys and decorated with semi-precious stones. We can observe that, apart from eye-catching appearance, designersââ¬â¢ brand names are what make the jewelry attractive. Hence, it is proposed that the jewelry must be marketed under a proper brand name. Market Size: Gold jewelry is equally popular among men and women in the country. From earrings, bracelets, bangles to crowns, a great variety of jewelry items exist that are in style among the women. Menââ¬â¢s variety includes bracelets, watches etc. Reports indicate that the gold sales have dropped by more than 50% in the past three years from 45 tons to about 15 tons per annum (Finch, 2009). Clearly, the reason for this drop is the rise in gold prices. Hence, if an alternative is given to the customer which is affordable and as good as the original gold, the n it is expected that the people will be attracted towards it in large numbers. Team Requirements: The team must have following members for successful execution of this business plan: Chief Executive Officer: His job will be to look after the overall operations of the business and coordinate between the teams. Jewelry Designer: His job will be to come up with new and attractive jewelry designs. Domain / Market Expert: His job will be to understand and explain market trends to the team Marketing Manager: He will be responsible for marketing and sales departments. Finance Manager: He will be responsible of the financial matters of the business Scalability of the Product: The business idea suggested here is reasonably scalable over a range of business volumes. The jewelry will be manufactured by individual workers without use of any sophisticated machine tools in general. The increase in the demand will be met easily by increasing the number of workers. Another feasible option will be to get the jewelry manufactured abroad in India or China where labor is comparatively cheap. This option can specially be considered if mass production is required to meet a very high demand. If however, the product does not gain expected popularity, the productions can simply be scaled down by decreasing the labor force. Financials: The price of gold in US markets is around $1500/oz. This amounts to around $10/carat. On the other hand, artificial gold alloys discussed above cost $0.15/carat on average. The major

Causes and impacts of the War of 1812 - Essay Example remained neutral. In 1805, the British defeated a combination of French and Spanish fleets near Cape Trafalgar, confirming its status as the worldââ¬â¢s most powerful naval power. The main strength of the French, on the other hand, lay in its strong ground forces. Since the two opponents could not directly pit their strengths against one another, they resorted to economic strangulation methods. This was the first reason why Britain resorted to unfair maritime practices. The second reason was the perception that the American merchant marine was unfairly benefiting greatly from the European war, while also growing at a rapid pace thus posing a threat to Britainââ¬â¢s naval dominance and its commercial shipping (Harney). The British Orders in Council of 1807 decreed that all neutral ships should pass through British ports. Franceââ¬â¢s Berlin decree of 1806, and Milan decree of 1807 proclaimed Britain as commercially isolated, and condemned neutral nations whose ships adhered to the British decree. America perceived that both countries were disregarding its neutral rights, but British maritime practices were opposed more because Britain controlled the seas (Gateway New Orleans). Impressment refers to the right to search for deserters of a nationââ¬â¢s armed forces. Britain started stopping and searching American ships for British deserters ââ¬â an act looked upon as a breach of sovereignty. American displeasure was exacerbated by the arrogant power entrusted by the British to their naval officers whereby they made unilateral, on-the-spot judgments about the nationality of any man on the boarded vessel Britain resorted to impressment because an increasing number of its sailors were deserting the navy due to discouraging factors like poor food, hard work and excessive discipline and preferring to work in the American merchant marine that itself faced a shortage of sailors and could afford to offer British deserters a wage treble of what

At the time Shakespeare wrote this play, ghosts were used in plays and stories commonly. Ghosts were often used to haunt the characters, or to be harbinger of omens. In the Elizabethan era, ghosts were in fact regarded by audience with a positive response and increased the appeal of the play. Using a ghost in the play as a dramatic device helped accrue the appeal of the play since people at that time were looking for such entertainment. A play is dramatic if it involves its audience. Shakespeareââ¬â¢s use of the ghost in the play elicits feelings of fear and dread in the spectator. It serves to perform many functions in the play, contributing to the overall impact of the tragedy. There were superstitions and fear rife in the Elizabethan audience about death and what follows later on. Their fears and apprehension has been used by Shakespeare to build a plot that influences the audience considerably; the plot feeds upon the perceptions of the people on purgatory and afterlife and a ssists in involving the audience in to the play. At the time the play was construed by Shakespeare, although there were many Protestants, there were people who did not belief upon the existence of ghosts and any afterlife. In the play, Shakespeare does not give any indication if the ghost was from hell or from purgatory. This leaves the audience ambiguous about the fate of Hamlet and how his actions were placed in the afterlife: that is, if he was condemned to hell or his given redemption for killing his uncle. The lack on knowledge on this matter leaves the audience embroiled in

Gendered Differences in Conversation Style Essay
Gendered Differences in Conversation Style - Essay Example The essays, especially the one by Deborah Tannen, however, also reveal a tendency on the part of the authors to essentialize women in a way that would compromise feminist projects in the long run. The essay by Solnit focuses on the need that men feel for a certain brand of masculine exhibitionism. She argues that men feel the urge to do so with women as it helps stroke their ego. Debunking conventional myths regarding women, and menââ¬â¢s perceptions regarding them, she cites her own experiences as the reason for her writing the essay. She relates a story of a man she met at a party at Aspen talked to her at length about a book that he had only read a review of. The book turned out to be one that was authored by her and this put the man in a position that was embarrassing. What Solnit finds disturbing, however, is how she was led into believing in the existence of another book similar in the subject of discussion to hers, released around the same time. She locates the source of th is gullibility in the way in which en treat women in general and the gendered arrogance that provides them with a false sense of confidence while they speak to women as is seen in the reaction of the man- That I was indeed the author of the very important book it turned out he hadn't read, just read about in the New York Times Book Review a few months earlier, so confused the neat categories into which his world was sorted that he was stunned speechless (Solnit). This leads to a relationship of inequality, positions that make communication difficult, if not impossible. Theories that seek to explain sexual difference such as the Freudian one, also seek to place men in a position of superiority. The conversational style derives much from this perceived and false sense of superiority that men have, vis-a-vis women. This often leads them to talk to women in a manner that is suitable only for a conversation with children. This again pushes back the process of negotiation that is essentia l for any kind of relationship to exist between the two sexes (Solnit). Tannenââ¬â¢s essay deals with the problems that men and women face while dealing with their partners of the opposite sex. The essay looks at the basic differences in the ways in which men and women look at existence itself and how it affects the ways in which they converse. Men, Tannen argues, base their existences upon an urge to improve or maintain their statuses in the society, an attitude that differs from women who seek to build relationships of intimacy. Tannen refers to popular representations of marriage that reinforce the conversational styles that are adopted by the two sexes. The highly gendered modes of communication between these two sexes are based upon a lack of understanding between the two (Tannen). Such a lack of communication is based upon an inability to accept the ways in which the other thinks and reacts. She argues that this is a result of an unwillingness to accept the existence of ano ther perspective. She speaks of a situation where men are unwilling to respond to the needs of women during a conversation. As an example, she cites the example of her own parents. When my mother tells my father she doesn't feel well, he invariably offers to take her to the doctor. Invariably, she is disappointed with his reaction. Like many
Impact of Media on the Society Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Impact of Media on the Society - Term Paper Example This paper explores different theoretical approaches on the mediaââ¬â¢s influence on society. In addition, this paper attempts to explain how the media can be used constructively with limited harm to society. Perhaps every child in the western world has been exposed to cartoons. Carton networks are so prevalent in the society that they have become an essential requirement for childrenââ¬â¢s upbringing. While cartoons play active roles in childrenââ¬â¢s development, they also have negative influences on the childââ¬â¢s welfare. Cartoon networks operate under animated programs that provide visual images. Cartoons Networks are the most preferred TV entertainment programs for children by adults because of their moral stories and family friendliness. However, the family friendliness of cartoon network has been a matter of intense criticism contemporarily owing to their increasing permissive nature of the programs. Using Cartoon Network as an example, this paper focuses on soci al learning theory and cultivation theory as possible explanations for Cartoon Network ââ¬Ës increasing impact on childrenââ¬â¢s cognitive development and how this has influenced the society. Social learning theory states that people learn new behaviors from one another by copying. Proposed by Albert Bandura, social learning theory is perhaps the most influential theory for learning and development. Because Cartoon Networkââ¬â¢s effect on childrenââ¬â¢s development is huge, it is perhaps a good idea to explain the Cartoon Networkââ¬â¢s impact on childrenââ¬â¢s development using social learning theory.Social learning theory focuses on direct support of ideas. The strengthening of ideas is perpetuated when people watch other people do things. Observational learning is a key component of social theory as well an dire need of repetition and redundancy (Ormand, 1999). It is therefore evident that Cartoon Network is repeating of stories, capture of childrenââ¬â¢s imag inations an indicator of social learning theory. Cultivation theory is another theory that explains the significance of Cartoon Network on childrenââ¬â¢s development. Cultivation theory asserts that substantial viewing of the television changes individualââ¬Ës perception about the world. The TV becomes the reality and TVââ¬â¢s portrayal of the world becomes engrained in the viewers mind. If a cultivated mind is challenged to think outside the TVââ¬â¢s life, that mindset can change (Evra, 2004). One cultivated experience is violence. Because of TVââ¬â¢s violent images, one could be easily influenced to belive that the TVââ¬â¢s portrayal of violence is the fact, which is not the case many times. (Donals, p. 5, 2005 ). The impacts that television programs like cartoons have on children cannot be underestimated but rather should be changed for positive outcomes. Many researchers have found that certain characters used in cartons have negative impacts on children. For i nstance, a research conducted by (Smith, 2011) found ââ¬Å"SpongeBobâ⬠character have negative impacts on children as it interferes with their executive functioning. Executive functioning involves problem solving, planning, thinking from abstract and working memory. This is because of the social learning theory. Social learning theory makes acquiring information and digesting information easy. According to Shanahan and Michael Morgan (1999), cultivation theory gives weight and credibility to selected part of each

Case5.1 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Case5.1 - Essay Example 1. Whatââ¬â¢s your opinion regarding forced ranking performance appraisals? Forced ranking, generally defined as a curve that leadership creates by assigning credit with ââ¬Å"certain proportions of the production to proportions of a producing populationâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Wikipediaâ⬠), would most likely be of great benefit to a floundering company. After one or two years of culling the very bottom (i.e. least productive) employees from the pack, the company ought to see substantial improvement in productivity and efficacy. Such a move, if conducted properly, should certainly be enough to set the company right and enable its continued existence. However, forced ranking is not advisable as a long-term solution. Quite simply, this is because once you have sifted all of the chaff from the wheat, all youââ¬â¢re left with is wheat. That is to say, if you cull effectively, eventually all youââ¬â¢re left with is the good stuff. By continuing to dismiss employees based on forced r anking, eventually the company would be eliminating effective, productive employees, because that would be all that was left.

Hammond Organ and the Leslie Speaker Essay Example for Free
Hammond Organ and the Leslie Speaker Essay Behind the Hammond organ is a man known as Laurens Hammond after whom the musical instrument is named. The Hammond organ is an electric organ that was invented in 1934. It was the work of Hammond Organ Company. The company originally made the instrument and sold it to churches. It was used as an alternative to the pipe organ used at that time in churches. The pipe organ was wind-driven. The new alternative was cost-effective. In the period between 1960 and 1970, the Hammond Organ became a standard keyboard and was popular in the playing of jazz, rock music, blues as well as gospel music (Laurens Hammond). Lauren Hammond, the man behind the Hammond Organ filed U. S. rights to manufacture a new kind of electrical musical instrument. His idea of an instrument could recreate the sound of a pipe organ. In the month of April 1935, his first invention was exposed to the public. Model A was also availed in June of the same year. Milt Herth used the instrument for playing his popular music live on WIND (AM) immediately upon its release. During World War II, the instrument was used by the military chapels in the US as well as the post theatres. It is therefore possible that the familiarity of the military with the organ could have contributed in making it popular in the period after the war (Laurens Hammond; Hammond organ history). For Hammond, creation of the organ was aimed at replacing the pipe organs with an affordable substitute in middle class residences. He also intended it as a gadget for radio broadcasting. The organ however began to be used by jazz musicians in the 1950s. Such musicians include Jimmy Smith. Its popularity in pop music led to its use in the British Radio 360 station. In that country, the organ was associated with ice rinks and elevator music. Later on, it became the organ popular with rock musicians Steve Winwood, Jon Lord and Keith Emerson in the 1960s and 1970s (Hammond organ history). The first Hammond organ that was made by Hammond Organ Company was operating on additive synthesis of waveforms that were got from harmonic series. The harmonic series were in turn made by mechanical tonewheels that rotate in front of electromagnet pickups. On the two keyboards are mounted some drawbars. The drawbars are slid in order to mix the element waveform ratios. Different models of the Hammond organ were produced but the Hammond B-3 organ model was and still is the most popular. The B-3 organ was for instance used towards the end of the 1960s and in the beginning of the 1970s for its overdriven sound. It was popular in progressive rock bands as well as blues rock. These earlier version has been used for a long time. This is despite the fact that the last electromechanical Hammond Organ came off the assembly in the middle of 1970 (Hammond organ history). After the electromagnetic organ, the musicians of the 1980s and 1990s started using other electronic and digital appliances to reproduce the sound which was produced by the Hammond Organ. This was solely because the classic Hammond Organ is relatively heavy and difficult to move from one place to another. This imitation was made easier by the digital signal processing and sampling technology in the years after 1990 and musicians could now copy the original Hammond sound (Edward). Most of the existing traditional organ fanatics prefer the Hammond tonewheels. Some of the popular models of this organ have tube amplifiers. In addition some of the most recent of the Hammond organ have a combination of tonewheel and solid amplifiers. The Hammond Organ Company is now the property of the Suzuki Company. Now Hammond Suzuki, the company manufactures digital organs which reproduce the sound of the tonewheel organ (Laurent Hammond). The Leslie Speaker On the other hand, the man behind the idea of the Leslie speaker is also the person after whom the instrument is named. His name is Donald Leslie. The Leslie Speaker is a special creation. It is an amplifier or loudspeaker that is often associated with Laurent Hammondââ¬â¢s Hammond organ. It is used by musicians to create special audio effects that make use of the Doppler effect. Together with the Hammond organ, the two are a popular ubiquitous component in most of the existing varieties of music. Like the Hammond Organ, the Leslie speakerââ¬â¢s production has also been taken over by the Suzuki Musical Instruments (Henricksen). At the beginning, the Hammond Organ Company refused to hire Don Leslie. Nevertheless, the man worked under a contract with the Hammond Company for some time. Don Leslie did some work for the local electric company replacing the old fifty cycle rotor tone generators. Instead of these, they put in place the sixty cycle units in the homes of customers. When it was first invented, the Leslie speaker was called the Vibratone. This was in 1941 about six years after the invention of the Hammond Organ. Vibratone was later adopted by the Fender Guitar Company when they manufactured a speaker system and effects unit which included a Leslie rotating speaker. Soon after Leslie sold the company under which he manufactured the Leslie speaker, Fender Company also adopted the name Leslie in 1965. At this time, even Fender had been bought by CBS and it was under CBS that Leslieââ¬â¢s company as well as Fender now operated. The name was therefore used, to be precise, by the CBS Company (Henricksen). The Leslie speaker was not advertised. Don Leslie demonstrated a prototype with Bob Mitchell near the Los Angeles city. The prototype was a rotating baffle put in a hole in a small closet that had a big speaker. It was in the closet near Don Leslieââ¬â¢s organ at home. Bob Mitchell was an organ player at the radio station KFI near Los Angeles. After the demonstration was made, Don Leslie was contracted to put in another similar prototype in the studios at the radio station where Bob worked. Only Bob Mitchell would be permitted to use this new installation. This awed Mitchell so much that he made attempts to copyright that speaker. This he did not succeed in though. After this, Mitchell was employed by the Mutual Broadcasting System as an organist. During his shows, Mitchell played the Hammond organ together with the Leslie speaker. From this, the exposure of the two inventions to the public was quick and guaranteed. From then, most of the organ players regardless of whether they were professional or part-time yearned for the sound created by these organs. In the jazz community for example, Jimmy Smith, the jazz organ player assisted in popularization of the sound among the artists of rock-roll in the years between 1950 and 1960 and even at the beginning of the 60s. At this time, the Leslie speaker had a height of more than sixty inches. It was referred to as the 30A. Don Leslie was inspired by this to manufacture more of the series founded by this 30A. He called the series Tall Boys or the 31 series. Later in the 50s, Don Leslie also made the 21H. These were meant for use in homes, smaller radio sound stages and venues for concerts. The first units were produced in 1941. From this time, the Leslie speaker was known under several different names. Such names as might be used to refer to the same speaker include Brittain Speakers, Hollywood Speakers and Crawford Speakers. In 1946 though, the speaker went back to its old known, the Leslie Vibratone. After seventeen years of rejection, the man behind the invention of the speaker offered the company for sale to Hammond. Don Leslie had waited for seventeen years to sell the company and after declaring hi interest in selling it again to Hammond, he waited thirty days. After this period, he still had not heard from Hammond. He retracted his offer (The Hammond organ history; Edward). In 1980, the Leslie name and the Electro Music were bought by the Hammond Corporation from their present owners, the CBS Company. It is now the property of Hammond under the company name Hammond Suzuki in USA (Edward). The Leslie speaker is used even to the present day and is actually very popular. In the present day, the Leslie parts can be got from various sources besides the fact that there are websites that offer plans which could help individual to construct the speaker. The sites have even posted photographic examples to guide one through the process. The modern Leslie speaker now has more enhanced speakers as well as electronics. Henricksen writes that the web even has a 500 W high performance model. In addition, the classic Leslie speaker has continued to be made and availed in the market. Similar effects can nevertheless be obtained through analogue electronic gadgets and digital imitation. The sound produced by the Leslie Speaker can be imitated by phase and chorus shifter instruments. In spite of this, nothing has the ability to copy the sound of the Leslie speaker that is heard in person. The imitation of the sound by some digital gadgets can however make distinction difficult (Henricksen). Conclusion The Hammond Company had also designed a set of speakers to work with the Hammond organ. However, most of the organ players have a preference for playing the Hammond via a rotating speaker cabinet. This speaker cabinet is what is known as the Leslie speaker after its inventor Donald Leslie and after many changes of names. (Donald Leslie lived between 1913 and 2004). This speaker system is an integrated combination of amplifiers where sound is produced after rotating a horn over a treble driver that is not moving. This is in addition to a rotating baffle as mentioned earlier which is placed under a non-moving bass woofer. The resulting characteristic sound is due to the pitch shifts that are in constant alteration made from the Doppler effect produced in turn by the moving sound sources. The original idea was to imitate the complicated tones and constantly altering sound sources originating from the big group of ranks in a pipe organ. From this initial organ, the effects were different depending on the rotor speed. The speed can be fastened between fast and slow by use of a console. The most characteristic effect is heard either when the speaker starts or stops rotating. Paul Di Matteo is known for the modifications he made to the Leslie cabinets. He replaced the original transducers with what is now a woofer of about 18 inches that has dual high frequency drivers well-liked for the high power stage applications. Chinese Mythology Essay -- essays research papers
Mythology is a collection of myths or the study of ancient traditional stories of gods or heroes, giving an explanation to an unexplained event. For Plato, the fist known user of the term, muthologia meant know more than the telling of stories (Kirk 8). Mythology is an important aspect to the world, today. Through the study of myths help us develop an idea of what the cultures were like. It includes hints that exhibit how they lived their lives. Myth is its serious purpose and its importance to the culture (Lansford 1). Every culture has its own myth that explains about the nature of that particular culture. The Chinese culture has been around for many centuries, its myths have accumulated into varies stories of gods and their culture. à à à à à China is the worldââ¬â¢s oldest continuous civilization (Cotterel 9). Evidence show the earliest Chinese civilization to be found around 1650 B.C. The beginnings of Chinese mythology, started around the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Influenced by alchemist ideas, Taoist and Buddhist superstitions, various writers created storied about their enigmatic surroundings. The beginning of the Chinese civilization is based on mythology. One of the creation myths is about the beginning of the world. In it, the world began as an egg and cracking open, the top of the shell grew to be the sky, the lower shell became the Earth, and in the middle stepped a man named Pââ¬â¢an-gu. Mythology of the ancient Chinese is apparent through art, music and literature. Since, there is no explanation of how the Chinese civilization began; mythology has been a way of explanation to the Chinese culture and other cultures around the world, today. à à à à à Chinese mythology, as with many other cultures, has many gods and goddesses that are in charge of various things. In the Ancient Chinese culture, there are gods and goddesses for every important aspect of the peopleââ¬â¢s life, even things as unlikely as the stove god and the door god. Other deities that were important to the Chinese people were the gods of the elements such as Chu Jung, the fire god, Lei Kun, the thunder god, the wind god, and the lightning goddess. Most of the element gods devoted themselves to punishing criminals and keeping evil spirits away. There were also important gods in charge of fields such as Kuan Ti, the god of war, Kuan Yin, the goddess of c... ...an anyone could possibly fathom. If everyone became educated about other culture, there would be little to know unknown, and there would probably be less hate in the world. Mythology, the study of myths, gives people an insight to others dreams, hopes, and their fears. We all have hopes, dreams, and fears. By learning about other culturesââ¬â¢ hopes, dreams, and fears we can feel more connected to each other and reach out. Mythology is a key element in keeping peace without shedding blood. The Clash of Races Africa has always been the centre of colonization for many European countries. With its colonization came stereotypes of Africanââ¬â¢s being inhumane, primitive and savage in comparison to the humanity of the civilized Europeans. The tradition model simplifies the stereotypes into Africans are bad and Europeans are good. Fortunately, it is not as clear cut as this. In Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe, both the Igbo of the Umuofia and the British of Europe have good sides and dark sides of their respective races revealing that traditional perceptions of these races are not entirely accurate. Through their systems of government, court systems and religion both parties have the positive and negative effects on each other. As the traditional model states, the Europeans did have a positive effect on the Africans of Umuofia. Firstly, the British missionaries built a hospital for the people of the village. The villagers state that the ââ¬Å"White manââ¬â¢s medicine was quick and worked wellâ⬠(181). They shared the European knowledge of medicine with the villagers and this vastly improved their health and overall well-being. In addition, the Europeans built a school for the people of the Umuofia leading to them acquiring jobs. In particular, ââ¬Å"A few months in were enough to make one a court messenger or even a court clerk (181).â⬠The schools also taught advanced and knowledge based positions to the villagers too. For example, ââ¬Å"[T]hose who stayed longer became teachersâ⬠(181-182). This passing of knowledge assisted the African society to become more educated and helped them get an occupation in the future. Contrary to the traditional model, the Africans of the Umuofia village are civil and humane. The Umofia village has communa... ...e way it was forced on them was inhumane Therefore, it is definite that the Europeans had a dark side too. In summary, if there is one obvious fact, it is that the issue is not as clear cut as the traditional model makes it seem. The inhabitants of Umuofia do have a dark side however, it is also evident that they have a civilized and humane side too. Similarly, the Europeans in general also demonstrate both humanity and inhumanity through the massacring of an entire tribe and in imprisoning many Africans who do not conform. They also attempt to enlighten the Africans by providing jobs and medicine. To conclude, one cannot simply say the Europeans are superior and Africans are inferior. In todayââ¬â¢s society, many stereotypical people are in existence and will forever exist but are those people not supposed to be progressing forward not reverting back to segregation?

M&M’s are commonly used as candy, but are they really?
M&M's (named after the surnames of the company founders Mars & Murrie[2]) are dragee-like ââ¬Å"colorful button-shaped candiesâ⬠[1] produced by Mars, Incorporated. The candy shells, each of which has the letter ââ¬Å"mâ⬠printed in lower case on one side, surround a variety of fillings, including milk chocolate, dark chocolate, crisped rice, mint chocolate, peanuts, almonds, orange chocolate, coconut, pretzel, wild cherry, and peanut butter. M&M's originated in the United States in 1941, and are now sold in over 100 countries. [1] They are produced in different colors, some of which have changed over the years. The difference between the different colored M&Ms is the dye added to the outer coating. In July 2006, Dark Chocolate M&M's reappeared in a purple package, followed in 2007 by Dark Chocolate Peanut M&M's. Also in 2006, the company piloted White Chocolate M&M's as a tie-in with their Pirates of the Caribbean promotion. The company also offered eight new flavors of M&M's via online sales, as well as at M&M's World locations: ââ¬Å"All That Razzâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Eat, Drink, & Be Cherryâ⬠; ââ¬Å"A Day at the Peachâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Orange-U-Gladâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Mint Conditionâ⬠; ââ¬Å"AlmonDeeLiciousâ⬠; ââ¬Å"Nut What You Thinkâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Cookie Minsterâ⬠. Mars also released a ââ¬Å"Crispy Mintâ⬠variety in Australia that year. [citation needed] Also in 2006, M&M's became the official chocolate of NASCAR. In 2007, M&M's introduced a limited-edition raspberry flavor called ââ¬Å"M&M's Razzberry Chocolate Candies. ââ¬Å"[citation needed] Also in 2007, M&M's produced a 50-foot, smiling Lady Liberty M&M statue to kick off a campaign encouraging Americans to create their own M&M characters at mms. com. The website allows for people to log in and create their own character from scratch. They choose everything from the color and shape to hair and accessories. During the 2008 Valentine's Day season Mars introduced bags of all-green M&M's. This was due to common urban folklore that holds green M&M's to be an aphrodisiac. [20] They were brought back for Valentine's Day 2009 alongside the ââ¬Å"Ms. Green Heats Up Valentine's Dayâ⬠contest. In 2008, two new limited-edition varieties of the candy were introduced ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Wildly Cherryâ⬠M&M's, and, as a marketing tie-in with the film Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, ââ¬Å"Mint Crispâ⬠M&M's. [citation needed] M&M's also introduced another new product called ââ¬Å"M&M's Premiumsâ⬠in 2008. They come in five flavors ââ¬â chocolate almond, mint chocolate, mocha, raspberry almond and triple chocolate (milk, dark, and white chocolate), which are sold in small upright cartons with a plastic bag inside. M&M's Premiums do not have a candy shell, but are coated with carnauba wax and color. Dark Chocolate was added in 2009, replacing Mocha. [citation needed] During summer of 2008, My M&M's launched ââ¬ËFaces,' which allows consumers to print the faces of loved ones on M&M's chocolate candies. citation needed] In January 2009, three new ââ¬Å"shimmeringâ⬠colors were added to the list of custom printable colors. The colors in this collection have a pearlescent finish. [21] In February 2009, M&M's launched ââ¬Å"M&Mââ¬â¢S Color Break-Upâ⬠Promotion in Australia where colors were sold in separate packs (one for each color): the packs included a code to win prizes. Religion and Well-Being Essay
Religion can be defined as a strong belief in the supernatural power that holds the sole authority to control human destiny. It is an institution that helps to express our belief in a heavenly power. Religion is as old as the human civilization and came into existence when the human brain became superior to realize the significance of faith, and worship. Earlier humans lived in small groups, and each group recognized an icon that harmonized the ideologies of different people in the group. Rituals were an essential part of lives and were carried for natural resources icons such as moon, sun, fire, river, etc. since its beginning religion has been very beneficial for humans and it still holds an important place in the lives of people. Religion is a completely personal choice and should be left to the choice of individuals. It is unfair to force a religion on followers of some other religion through offering gifts and cash. Each religion has its own beliefs and ideologies and should be mutually respected by others in the world. Only then this world can become a better place to live. A growing number of studies convincingly demonstrate that people who are more deeply involved in religion tend to enjoy better physical and mental health than individuals who are less involved in religion (Ellison & Levin, 1998; Koenig, McCullough, & Larson, 2001). As this literature continues to develop, researchers have begun to tackle challenging issues that involve explaining how the salubrious effects of religion on health might arise. A number of potentially important theoretical perspectives have been devised. For example, some investigators argue that involvement in religion exerts a beneficial effect on health because it helps people cope more effectively with the deleterious effects of stress (Pargament, 1997), whereas other researchers maintain that the potentially important health-related effects arise from the sense of meaning in life that many people find through greater involvement in religion (Park, 2005). An explanation that was proposed some time ago forms the focal point of the current study. More specifically, a number of researchers have argued that people who are more involved in religion tend to have better health because they are more likely to adopt beneficial health behaviors than individuals who are less involved in religion (Levin & Schiller, 1987). Subsequent research has provided support for this perspective. For example, a number of studies indicate that individuals who attend religious services often are more likely to avoid the use of tobacco and alcohol (Gillum, 2005; Strawbridge, Shema, Cohen, & Kaplan, 2001). Moreover, greater involvement in religion has been associated with more frequent exercise, a better diet, better sleep quality, and the regular use of seat belts (Hill, Burdette, Ellison, & Musick, 2006; Hill, Ellison, Burdette, & Musick, 2007). There is also some evidence that religious individuals are more likely to engage in a range of preventive health practices, such as getting a regular mammography, having a routine cholesterol screening, and obtaining flu shots (Benjamins, 2006; Benjamins & Brown, 2004; Benjamins, Trinitapoli, & Ellison, 2006). Although there is broad-based empirical support for the notion that religious involvement is associated with beneficial health behaviors there is still a great deal that is not known about this relationship. One area that is in need of further development forms the focal point of the current study. More specifically, researchers have not devised well-articulated models that explain how involvement in religion promotes the practice of better health behaviors (e. g. , Benjamins et al. , 2006; Ellison et al. in press). This information is essential for the development of more effective interventions that are administered in religious institutions. As van Ryn and Heaney (1992) observe, ââ¬Å"Clearly, application of well-defined and carefully tested theories to the program development process holds tremendous advantages for health educators in terms of coherence, effectiveness, and evaluation of interventionsâ⬠(p. 328). Three potentially important mechanisms have been identified in the research that has been done so far. The first involves the notion that certain religious beliefs encourage people to take better care of their bodies. Included among these beliefs is the notion that the body is the ââ¬Å"temple of Godâ⬠(Ellison et al. , 2009) as well as the belief that better spiritual health is associated with better physical health (Benjamins et al. , 2006). Second, a number of investigators provide evidence which suggests that some people take better care of themselves if they worship in congregations that provide formal programs that are designed to promote better health behavior (Campbell et al. 2007; DeHaven, Hunter, Wilder, Walton, & Berry, 2004). Third, other researchers report that people who attend church on a regular basis are more likely to adopt beneficial health behaviors because they are encouraged to do so by their fellow church members (Ellison et al. , 2009). For more than 100 years, researchers have argued that religion is an inherently social product. For example, James Mark Baldwin, an early president of the American Psychological Association, wrote in 1902: ââ¬Å"The fact is constantly recognized that religion is a social phenomena. No man is religious by himself, nor does he choose his god, nor devise his offering, nor enjoy his blessings aloneâ⬠(p. 325). Although the early theorists made invaluable contributions to the literature, they did not explore the more pragmatic implications of their insights. The current study was designed to contribute to more recent efforts by a new generation of scholars who have begun to assess health-related effects that appear to arise from deeper involvement in religion. We hope the findings from the current study and the theoretical perspective we have devised encourage further research in this field.

Into the world is a concept that represents Journey, change, and going from the old world into a new world. To go from old to new, one must first experience a disruption or a catalyst, and go through a process of obstacles such as parents, culture and the society In order to adjust and fit in the new world. This adjustment can have either positive or negative consequence on the self and others around. The film bend It Like Beckman (BILL) effectively explores this concept as the audience can easily relate to the characters and with apparent themes that define a person going into the world.Pl ) In the film bend it like Beckman Jess-minder is not comfortable, but dissatisfied with her life because she's restricted by her parents that want her to be a typical Indian girl compared to her older sister. (UP) In the opening scene of the film it is shown Jess-minder dreaming of her self-playing football with Beckman and as it goes on to the panel of the commentators, her mum is also there and says that Jess- minder should not be playing football but should be at home doing house duties. This shows how her parents are restricting her from fulfilling her dream. Pl) Jess- minder Is also confined by her cultural expectations, which requires her to be a traditional Indian girl that does household tasks; (UP) A Juxtaposition of a costuming theme Is showing her sister and mother wearing cultural dresses, which reflects their adherence to their culture but Jess-minder wearing tract suit. This highlights her dissatisfaction with the cultural expectations that are being forced on her.It is these restrictions and expectations that act as a barrier that force Jess-minder not to ruse her dream of playing a professional football; these limitations can be defined as a disruption or a catalyst which drive her to go into a new world and furthermore creating audience engagement and there for it is effective in exploring the concept into the world. (Pl)Jess-minders Journey to the new world was affected by the obstacles she had to face along the way. Her process of going into the new world meant that she had to be defiant against her parents, her culture and the stereotypical society. 2) This is shown effectively In the scene of her family leaving to go church and her In her sleeping robe calming to be sick; but as her parents leave she removes the robe and out she reveals herself dressed In a football gear. The removing of the robe is an apparent symbolism of Jess-minder turning a new leaf in her life because she was being sickened or limited by the robe of parents. Jess- minder is being defiant, evidently draws in the audience making it effective in exploring the concept into the world. Pl) A montage of Jess-minder and Jules racing football in the set against the scene shot of Jess-minder performing traditional duties; (UP) demonstrates the expectations that act as obstacles to Jess- minder realizing her dream as well as Jules whom is an alliance in her Journey. (Pl ) Jess-minder's defiance and journey to the new world had a clear consequence on herself and others around her. Becoming a professional football player, she achieved her goal and changed her surroundings. To achieve this she had to be assertive and not give up In her pursuit and as a result her two worlds to become one; this Is Leary shown In a long shot of Jess-minder going up tosses In her traditional clothing and (UP) the close-up of her father watching her play football and chanting along with exploring the concept into the world is because it clearly displays the consequence of going into the world, as a result from a disruption or catalyst and the process of obstacles faced, through its filming techniques and they are easily identifiable and the message that it carries is universal, that everybody is dissatisfied with their parent's intuitions. History short paper - Essay Example The primary source indicates that during this time period, religion was prevalent and almost all France citizens and residents could identify with some sort of religious belief. The edict was basically addressing religious issues. The law outlines that during this time period, Catholic was the recognized religion, with most of the French practicing or being expected to practice Catholic as a religion, as provided by the edicts and statues. The Edict of Nantes also brought out the fact that identifying with a particluar religion was a cause for religious discrimination. The Protestants were not permitted to worship freely and in public. In addition, it shows that during this time period, the government was biased and did not serve its subject as equals. Apart from denying them their religious freedom, the government did not recognize protestant marriages and termed them as illegal leaving the children to be branded as illegitimate. This, therefore, was a hindrance to property rights and property inheritance. The increased level of discrimination and conflicts among religions resulted into violence in various regions. In France, for example, there were a total of eight outbreaks of violence as a matter of religious differences. The greatest being St Bartholomewââ¬â¢s Day massacre in Paris (Bramlett 2-4). The greatest issue that the Edict of Nantes intended to address was religious freedom. It indeed o recognize that France had many subjects who had different interests. These interests included issues such as worship and it was crucial for them to be allowed to practice what they believed. The other issue that the edict clearly brought out was that marriage had to be legal, regardless of ones religion. This was beneficial for the protestants whose marriages, as indicated above, were not recognized as legal. Legalizing marriages for all religions ensured that all children attained the right to inherit property. The edict, however, still emphasized on Catholic

Trademark Dilution - Essay Example Trade Marks Act 1984 section 5 (3) confers right to the owner of the existing trade mark to prevent registration of a rival trade mark that dilutes the distinctness and exclusivity of his existing trade mark. The owner of the original trade mark is entitled under section 10 (3) of the said Act to sue the duplicator for infringement. In fact, section 5 (3) bars a trade mark from being registered if it is identical or similar to an earlier trade mark which has a reputation use of which will give unfair advantage to the new trade mark sought to be registered and/or will erode the distinctive character or reputation of the original trade mark 1. Richard Conroy v Smithkline Beecham PLC 2 involved similar sounding name of a product NIT NURSE, an anti-lice product sought to be registered by the applicant was opposed by Smithkline Beecham PLC on the ground that its long established product of repute namely NIGHT-NURSE, a oral decongestant would suffer from erosion of its uniqueness it had enjoyed all along in the market. Although the name NIT NURSE would not give any unfair advantage , it would be detrimental to Night-Nurse in the ââ¬Å"tarnishmentâ⬠of a oral medicine of repute by the similar mark meant for treatment for ââ¬Å"blood-sucking insectsâ⬠. The Palestine-Israel Conflict and the United States Essay - 3
The Palestine-Israel Conflict and the United States - Essay Example Israel is using its military and political dominance to impose a highly discriminatory system to withdraw the non-Jewish citizens from the territories it has occupied. The gravity of the situation can be estimated from the fact that ââ¬Å"Israel has at least 150 nuclear weapons (ââ¬Å"Israel has 150â⬠). Ever since the occupation of Palestine by Israel, the native Palestinians have been subject to intense discrimination and abomination. ââ¬Å"Palestinians face systematic discrimination merely because of their race, ethnicity, and national origin, depriving them of electricity, water, schools, and access to roads, while nearby Jewish settlers enjoy all of these state-provided benefitsâ⬠(Bogert cited in ââ¬Å"Israel/West Bankâ⬠). The day-to-day life of the native Palestinians is controlled by the discriminatory policies of Israel without any conceivable security reason. For instance, the Israeli authorities have made Palestinian children walk to other villages for sc hooling because there is none in Jubbet al-Dhib that is a Palestinian village accommodating over 160 Palestinians. The Israeli authorities did not provide any electricity to the village and also rejected the provision of solar-powered streetlights in the village. Villagers have no electricity and accordingly, no means of refrigerating food. All non-Jewish citizens of Israel are denied its nationality. The US has played a major role in strengthening Israel economically and in power but today, Israel has become more of a liability for the US than an asset. ââ¬Å"The engine that has run the Israeli economy for decades has been American aidâ⬠¦Israel is heavily in debt to the U.S. Treasury, its commercial banks, and its Jews and other citizens and organizations that have purchased millions of Israel bonds or donated money to Jewish causesâ⬠(Tivnan 217). Israel is not only costing the US billions of dollars every year but is also bringing the image of the US down in the international media. Thousands of

Evidence - Essay Example in the calendar of the judiciary in the arrangement of the appointment of subject, in line with the proceedings concerning state party cases (Pontell & Stephen, 2010, p. 41). The California code of civil procedure states does not prevent an attorney to permit any kind of representative to stand before the courtroom and present the evidence and witnesses engaged in the proceedings. The mother is therefore entitled to a maximum period of twenty days to submit a respond to the jury of the state. An attached subpoena that the court issued at the beginning of the trial should be handed out as a means of showing proof of chamber sittings between the motherââ¬â¢s attorney and the jury. Californiaââ¬â¢s Business and Professions Code, 349a puts the motherââ¬â¢s lawyer in a state where he or she has to hand out an advance note of the court case three months prior to the lawsuit commencement. As a result, the child and his attorney have ninety days to take action before the lawsuit begins and at this period, they have the ability to organize for the justification of the child. Nevertheless, it is of value noting the fact that there exists no specific type of note necessary, except where notification of the defendant of the legal basis of the claim and the type of loss sustained, including with the specificity the nature of the wounds endured. At this point, it is important to underline the fact that if the notice is served within 90 days of the expiration of the applicable statute of limitations, the time for the commencement of the action shall be extended 90 days from the service of the notice (Pontell & Stephen, 2010, p.

Western Civilization Essay Example for Free
Western Civilization Essay Rome was one of the greatest empires that ever lived. With all of its power, it was the center of the world. Rome was a united empire and with the support of its citizens the empire went on to live for many years. Rome had many strengths such as wealth, location, and especially their military. Their geographical location made them very strong and powerful because being by the sea made trade easy as well as exporting and importing to help grow the empire. The Roman Empire started small and rapidly spread through Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The Roman Empire was lead by emperors. For many years Romans controlled all parts of the government and military, but slowly they started to fall apart. Every decision that Rome made had a vast affect on the empire. Because of the decisions the Roman Empire made, it created a domino affect on the empire and the empire then started to fall apart. Also, many thoughtless decisions made by emperors weakened the city and eventually caused the Roman Empire to crumble. The empire declined due to political, economic, and religious reasons. It also declined because of the military and the decreasing population. The Roman Empire began in 27BC and before that it was called the Roman Republic. Since they expanded and gained so much power they became the Roman Empire. While the Roman Empire grew, so did everything else. It made many improvements in the arts and sciences. They also encouraged men and women to have an education. The Romans was a modern empire because it allowed their people to be free, but also have them understand that they have to follow the laws. Most empires did not allow the freedom the Roman Empire gave their people, and that is why the Roman Empire was one of the best. The reasons why the Roman Empire was the best because it kept the society together and the military helped with they safety of the people. One reason why the Roman Empire declined was because of religious views.à Rome was united because they followed the same religion. Since they followed the same religion, views, and ideas it kept them together. The Roman religion affected the people in a good way and taught them to stay together. The new religion of Christianity started to attract a majority of the Romans. Everyone started to follow Christianity and it become part of everyoneââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ lives. Since everyone started to follow Christianity and what is what doing to the people, the Roman emperors felt that Christianity was really powerful and could be a possible threat to the Roman Empire. Many of the Romans committed to the faith of Christianity and they refused to abandon it because it was the most important part of their life. The Romans took their beliefs very seriously and would do anything to keep them. Because the Romans went against the Emperors, it led to many differences in the society. Also, Romans started to disconnect from the ââ¬Å"unitedâ⬠Roman Empire. The Romans were splitting up and they were not united anymore. This caused the decline in patriotism and the Romans were not as patriotic as they used to be. The Romans disunity from the religion also caused problems in politics and government. By the time Constantine legalized Christianity it was too late because the Roman people were already on their own. The ruling to ban Christianity was a terrible decision and caused the empire to fall. Another reason why the empire fell was because of the many political problems. One major problem with the Empire was that it was a huge city, spreading from Spain to the Persian Gulf. The Roman government system was built to control a small region, not an empire. Since the empire was so huge, it was very hard to go from one side to the other side. Because of the huge area it was also hard to communicate with everyone. Back the, they did not have clear roads or cars to travel so it was hard to keep the whole empire under one government. Because they could not keep the whole empire together, two capitals were created. The capitols separated the empires, the Western Empire and the Eastern Empire, but they were still one huge empire. They followed the same laws, rules. Adding the second capitol however, added economic problems. The government could not control the whole region and started to make mistakes. The emperors in charger after the huge empire was created were not trained to deal with the huge land; and that is why theyà made mistakes. With that, the soldiers lost trust of the emperors and started to take orders from the general. In those times, the military was mostly everything and that showed how strong and powerful the empire really is. Because of this military not trusting the emperor, it was most likely that the empire would fall. Because they expanded so much and did not know how to control it caused their decline. When the Empire was split into the eastern and western half it caused many problems. Splitting the region resulted in having two different emperors. Having two different rulers caused much confusion and they both had different ideas. The Eastern half of the Empire was made up of the heavily urbanized and rich trading cities of Greece, Persia, and Egypt, whereas the Western Empire was comprised of rather poor, small cities and extensive farmland. Splitting the empire caused the people to be not united. Having the people ruled by separate emperors was difficult because the Roman Empire is used to being united and together. This caused people to have more of an opinion, which caused the decline of the Empire as a whole. The most important factor that leads the fall of Rome was the decline of the economy. The Romans were very wealthy, but slowly their economic system started to decrease. Rome made most of its money from taking over other countries and empires. When they invaded other countries and territories they took their money and resources to help the Roman Empire grow. They stopped getting their money because there were no more countries or empires to take over or conquer. Since Rome did not have a fixed economy, they had no more money. The Romans did not set up an economy where they would have a flow of money. Also, when the military declined, other nations stopped paying tributes and taxes that ran the military and the empire. This led to the Roman Empire not having enough money to support the empire. Because money was scarce, roads and bridges were stopped being built; which led to a decrease in trade. One way they were making lots of money was from trade. Since that was decreasing, it stopped them getting money. Because there were less places to travel, trading decreased. Because the people had no one too trade their food with farmers were affected. Eventually, the farmers entirely died out and Romes main economic giver was lost. Also, wars were a great impact on the economy. The Roman Empire fought many wars, and as theyà fought more, they needed more money. The empire was spending most of the money in the military. Later on they did not have the money to support the military. Because they needed more money, they started to make more coins. Making more money caused inflation. Because the government could not receive money through other places, their empire slowly declined due to the inflation. The economic problem caused many other problems to arise. Since they had no money, they couldnââ¬â¢t protect their country or their people. Because of the economic issue everything else started to fall apart and that is why the main reason of the empireââ¬â¢s decline was because of their economic issues. The Roman Empire also was not very up to date with using and inventing technology, which caused some of the fall. The Roman Empire was using slaves to do many of their work. The empire was an agricultural economy so most of their money would come through farming, so they would have slaves doing this. Since they had slaves, they did not progress in terms of advancing their technology. Having people do their work for little or no pay, they did not realize it would affect them. When something was needed, they would just use the slaves to make it or get it. This caused the empire to decline because they never furthered their research or technology to keep up with the rest of the world. Because they did not have the resources to keep updated they were being left behind and other countries were invading the empire. Also, they did not advance in their weapons, so the military was weak. They didnââ¬â¢t invent any new weapons, while other countries and empires were having new weapons. Havi ng no technology caused the empire to decline. The decline of the Roman Empire was also caused because of the empires leaders. If the leaders were qualified and knew which was best for the empire, the empire may have survived. For example, the emperors should have made a correct system for the economy. If they had a legitimate way of getting money, then the empire would have not crashed. Since the emperors believed they would be getting money from their takeovers, they would be okay. They did not realize that one day they would be no more places to conquer. Also, when the trading had stopped, the emperors should have found another way to do the trading, but they did not. The emperors of the Romanà Empire were not experienced enough to handle the responsibility and that is why the Roman Empire fell. Also, Christianity was outlawed to keep all of the Roman citizens under complete control, but that did not happen. The people rebelled when they were told they could not follow Christianity. The emperors also could not control their huge empire. Because they were wide spread, they had a hard time keeping everything and everyone under control. With the right leadership, many of these problems would have not even occurred. Also, problems would have been resolved much quicker because the leader would know what he is doing. Another important reason for the decline of the empire was the invasions. The Romans have been fighting against the barbarians for many years. The Roman Empire had to be on the look out from the barbarians that lived on the borders. These barbarians formed a constant threat for invading Rome. Since the empire was so big, it needed more manpower to cover all the borders. After time, they did not have enough people in the military to secure the borders, After time, the barbarians were out numbering the Romans. They were also getting stronger. The barbarians started to close in on the Empire. During the war, Rome was not as powerful and the barbarians were crushing them. The Romans could not defeat them because the barbarians kept coming. The barbarians completely overwhelmed the Roman people. The Romans were getting killed and no one to replace them with. Because the shortage of people in the military, the barbarians came and invaded the Roman Empire. The empire could not protect itself because of the multiple problems. One problem caused another and another. If Roman Empire had money to support the military and have it be strong as powerful like it was before, the Empire would have not been invaded. Towards the end of the empire, the decreasing in population had an effect on the empire. Depopulation occurred for many reasons. Because there was no trade, there were no farmers and industries, and also less people in the military. The shortage of industry led to Romans importing goods rather than exporting. Since they had no money, industries did not have enough money to run and make goods. Therefore, people who worked in the industries had no jobs and had to go elsewhere to get a job. The shortage of farmers led toà Romans depending on other nations for food, basic needs of life. Depending on other countries did not help that much because they did not always give the Romans what they wanted and when they wanted it. The military was reduced because there was not enough people to join and keep it as big as they did before. This shortage of people was brought on by a few factors. Because of having economic problems, people left, which made the Roman Empire smaller and weaker. The military was not as big as it used to be which caused other nations to see the Roman Empire as weak. There were many reasons why the Roman Empire declined. It took the Roman Empire many years to come to an end. The Roman Empire stood for many years and it was one of the best empires that ever stood. The empire was strong and united, but eventually it came to an end. The economy was one big problem because it affected and started many other problems to follow. When the economy crushed, it caused a huge affect on the empire as a whole. The empire was not getting money, which stopped many projects and trading. The empire was not strong and powerful anymore because they had no money to support the military and trading. Other big problems were the religious and political issues. Christianity had a major outlook as it came into effect. When the new religion came about, it caused the people to separate and question their emperor. The new religion caused a lot of abruption being that the emperor banned it from ever being believed in. Many of the poor political decisions caused the decline. With the land getting bigger and bigger the government did not know how to control it and made two capitals. Having two capitals instead of caused the Roman Empire to separate and united. Some of the few small problems were the technology advancement they did not have. Not being up to date with technology caused a problem because they were using their old ways. Because they did not have the technology they were not as powerful. All of these reasons were causes to why the Roman Empire declined. Works Citied Goldsmith, Edward.
